The Lycoris plant, or Higan Bana (彼岸花)
One legend has it that when a person sees someone for the very last time, these flowers, also called red spider lilies, would bloom along their path. Perhaps because of this sorrowful legend, the Japanese often use these flowers in funerals. The popular Japanese name, Higan Bana (彼岸花) for lycoris is literally “higan” (the other or that shore of The Sanzu River) flower which means “decorative and enjoyable”; a flower of the afterlife in Gokuraku Jyoudo (極楽浄土).
